The world of “AI” has entered into all our lives in the most unfortunate way.

FIrst of all, what’s currently called AI is simply a new type of software tool called an LLM and it’s not “artificial intelligence” at all, it’s just software, and it has a very specific use.

It’s downside is that it’s very expensive to run this software to get its seemingly remarkable results. And this expense has triggered a few serious side effects.

And one of those side effects is the opportunity to use human psychology to create fear and panic in other humans by it’s scary predictions which have ALL now been debunked.

I’m not confused by what’s going on here because of my 58 years of experience being a computer hardware/software design engineer. I’m flexing my credentials here (see my wewbsite at informationworkshop.org) to signal that I know my sh*t. I also teach critical thinking skills, and I have lots of “background knowledge” that comes into play here including human psychology.

Interestingly, what I am about to do here is actually confirm your suspicions because you’re not stupid and you sense all this anyway. But when you hear the whole story you’ll go “Oh, I see” and be able to explain it to your colleagues. Note how short this article is.

The term “artificial intelligence” was coined in 1956 (when I was 3 years old) to draw attention to a proposal for a summer workshop at Dartmouth College. It got funded in part because of its provocative title.

In this photo I’m holding my copy of AI Expert magazine I bought in 1988. What’s interesting is that all the articles are trying to help you find insights in your company data or knowlegbase (databases) and all the vendors list their street addresses and landline phone numbers because this is about 5 years before the internet start to come to life. The articles talk about neural networks (which is part of how our brains work) and a neural network engine, and parallel computation (GPU) is now in billions of existing Apple iPhones and Macs in daily use.

The rug is about to be pulled out from the AI cloud providers

When the technology progresses where we can run LLMs locally on our phones and devices so that our information remains private suddenly the cloud providers are not being used and they cannot generate revenue. Boom.

Apple has already built a massively powerful non-cloud based LLM compute capability and everyone else will be playing catch up. This is a prediction, and predictions are unverifiable claims and we should. be suspicious
