In our StoryWeaving Salon with Anastassia Makarieva and John D. Liu for the Global Earth Repair Convergence May 7-11 we asked them both what fascinates them about each other’s work. As Anastassia noted, the time she has spent in the boreal forests of Siberia amounts to years. Yet much of her work is theoretical. So she appreciated how John’s work and his films have inspired people around the world to translate the science into action, for example through the Ecosystem Restoration Communities movement. In this conversation, Anastassia described her work on the concept of the biotic pump, the beating heart of the forest that draws water on land to sustain its rich, complex life cycles. John and Anastassia both speak eloquently about the complexity and elegant simplicity of nature, and our imperative as humans to learn, heal and be inspired by the living Earth. Anastassia spoke about the importance of both doing and non-doing: restoring and regenerating ecosystems where they have been disturbed, but equally important halting all deforestation and disturbance of the complex forest ecosystems of the Amazon, the Congo Basin, Canada, Siberia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea that remain. Enjoy the conversation!
