Welcome To the Blackout

Humanity is frying itself alive but refuses to turn the stove off, because the fumes smell quite tasty. This is how I would summarize our collective cognitive blackout. Stupidity has won. But was there ever even a battle between smart and stupid? As Europe records thousands of heatwave deaths, railway lines buckle and supermarkets in France run out of foil, it looks like Game Over. To those with a couple of functioning brain cells, it has been abundantly clear for a while that this stupid species will not save itself. Civilisation is unravelling before our eyes in a pretty chaotic, clumsy, and disorganised manner. They call it a collapse not because it happens suddenly but because it happens ungracefully: you won’t fall on your hands. You fall on your face. Welcome to the blackout.

This week was particularly triggering for climate influencers like me. The online trolls were out in the millions, and I had all of my threads overwhelmed with the usual “It is called summer, stupid” or “the heatwave is caused by the sun, not CO2”, or one of my favourites: “so, you’d rather have Communism instead?”

LOL

But there is an audience for this messaging you know, and that is why it is so effective. People aren’t simply abysmally stupid. They are the fungus on the petri dish who understands everything about life, entertainment, going to church, having sex, having a family or holding down a job, but is unable to process the fact that it is living, growing and pissing on itself within a giant enclosure it cannot comprehend, even though space ships sent back pictures of this enclosure, half a century ago.

It is the most annoying attribute of stupid people that they not only dismiss things they don’t understand: they actually attack them. The fear of truth is so immense, because it threatens everything they take for granted: life, family, work, food. This is why fear and ignorance very quickly turn into violence. I have received thousands of death threats, as other climate influencers. My finger is constantly on the Block button as I try to excavate tunnels through this dense dystopia of robo-trolls. Occasionally, I come across another human. Hello. Welcome to the blackout. May I share this darkness with you.

It is ironic that social media is where I make my living, because it truly is a cesspool, especially since it became infiltrated by AIs. So, I’m not block-shy. If Elon’s algorithm determines what I see and who sees what I post, If Facebook sends a wire to the troll machine as soon as I post something about climate, and if Substack increasingly presents me with posts written by AI, then the least I can do is block whoever I want and curate my discussion threads the way I want them to look to my readers.

Some call it undemocratic. I call it advocacy. After all, I am just another mosquito in this cesspool, trying to survive. Ever since I got the Bestseller badge on Substack, I get pestered by AIs pretending they are humans, Bitcoin shops pretending they are think tanks, and think tanks pretending they have ethics. I block them all, and I have probably blocked thousands of profiles that I should not have blocked. I’d rather over-block than under-block. Welcome to the blackout.

This digital dystopia is increasingly dangerous. So, I encourage my readers to keep on blocking. The more we block, the more likely it is we will find each other in one of the remaining tunnels of this collapsing mine.

By the way, it’s hot in here. Can anybody find the light switch?
