We’re a nation of neighbourhoods – and if we change our neighbourhoods, we can change the nation. But what would a neighbourhood fit for the future we face look like?

In the next episode of our podcast SCREW THIS, LET’S TRY SOMETHING ELSE, Maryam Pasha and I take you on a journey to Birmingham to meet Imandeep Kaur & the CIVIC SQUARE team, and hear about the incredible work they’re doing ot create a neighbourhood resilient to what’s coming – including their 3 degree neighbourhood plan.

Immy Kaur : CIVIC SQUARE

We also hear from brilliant economist Kate Raworth on how the approach CIVIC SQUARE are taking could work for neighbourhoods everywhere. We explore how a new economic reality, in which resources are managed with care, and finance flows back into our communities – not out of them – would result.

This episode tells the story of their decade plus journey from exploring what the community need, to building a successful hub, only to have it priced out of existence by extractive landlords, right up to the step change brought by their recently aquired land, owned in perpetuity by the community, to build their new neighbourhood public square.

“The neighborhood… however, we define it all through British history, that’s the scale at which when you build the skills, the confidence, the belonging, we’ve tackled huge challenges” Immy Kaur
